What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic medicine is a comprehensive approach to your healthcare. As well as treating your symptoms, we search for the root of the problem to prevent those symptoms from reoccurring. You, as a whole person, are the focus of assessment and treatment. The body has an innate ability to heal itself and naturopathic medicine helps to strengthen this ability or simply rebalance when things get off-track.
Naturopathic medicine is based on six principles:
What is a Naturopathic Doctor? Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are highly trained alternative healthcare practitioners who have completed four years of post-graduate training at a college accredited by the Council of Naturopathic Medical Education (CNME). NDs will also have completed the standardized Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examination (NPLEx) set forth by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners (NABNE), and should hold an active license or registration in their state or province of practice.
NDs take the time to understand who you are. First visits typically run 60-90 minutes with follow-up visits running 30-60 minutes depending on your needs. Treatment is individualized, which means that what happens during that time is about you. NDs will help you find the most effective path to your health - what works for you so that you can lead a healthy and balanced life.
Naturopathic medicine is based on six principles:
- First, do no harm. Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) work with gentle therapies to minimize side effects, and can often work in conjunction with conventional medical treatments to support the body.
- Work with the healing power of nature. Our bodies have the innate ability to heal themselves and correct imbalances. Sometimes our bodies have difficulty balancing themselves, especially after years of unhealthy living or constantly being under the stresses of today's fast-paced lifestyle. Naturopathic medicine works with the body's natural healing ability to achieve balance and health.
- Treat the whole person through individualized treatment. Naturopathic Doctors take the time to understand who you are and what your body goes through on a daily basis. By understanding how your body works, treatment can be tailored to you in the form of diet and lifestyle modification, acupuncture, botanical medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, hydrotherapy, etc.
- Treat the root cause. Naturopathic medicine not only addresses the symptoms that are troubling you, but also seeks to treat the root of the problem to prevent symptoms from occurring in the first place.
- Prevention is the best cure. The easiest way to treat a disease is to prevent it from occurring in the first place. Naturopathic medicine is often a lifestyle choice, not a quick fix to health problems. By achieving a wholesome and balanced lifestyle, many common health concerns can be prevented.
- Doctor as teacher. Naturopathic Doctors teach the principles of healthy living and share their knowledge. This allows you to understand how you can achieve and maintain health.
